PROJECT SPACE.

ALEX SOLIS.

What was involved in the Brief?

The brief specialised in illustration and was asked to combine research of any illustrator you might find appealing in terms of their style, work or design themes and projects. After doing background research into the designer, I then had to create two (2) drawings of direct copies of the original work, two (2) drawings mixing two different pieces of the illustrator’s work and finally create your own individual piece but using elements and techniques from the illustrator. The task was given to form an ability to explore and experiment in visual representation techniques and evaluate its success in communicating ideas.

What was involved in the Brief?

The illustrator I chose for this brief was Alex Solis because I like his illustrative style and how detailed he can make his concepts and projects look. The first task was to create two identical pieces (wonder woman and the polar bear) which I thought would be an easy introduction into his type of style. I had to ensure I followed through with similar line work, shading and details where ever they needed to be added. For the second task, I had to combine two of his original pieces and find a link and a connection to mix them without having any loose or off putting features. The two images on the left were my combined set featuring a snake and Gizmo along side Elsa and Sub-Zero. These sets used a lot of detail that I had to experiment with to get it right, especially when highlighting features (such as the snake scales). The final piece was my own creation using his style. I tried to capture the essence he includes in all his pieces and create a fun and adorable illustration. For this piece I looked for characters that had a similar appearance which would maintain a balance throughout the piece and used techniques I learnt to capture their own characteristics.
