COMPOSITION.

What was involved in the Brief?

The brief entails for a cover to be created for a publication that focuses on design. The cover would set the theme for the overall magazine and would also create an image for future editions. Along with creating a front cover for the publication, the task also included to create the recurring page templates for the magazine design, (this included contents, contributors, imprint and Editor’s letter page). For the third task, a grid system should already be processed and would need to be applied for a 1, 2 and 6 page article layout. Automatic page numbers, headers and footers must be created for both a print and digital (interactive PDF) version of the magazine.

What was involved in the Brief?

To begin the process of creating a magazine, I first had a develop the name of the publication as well as the theme that I would want to carry out through the whole process and be open enough to work with future editions. My strongest development was using a lattice that cascaded down my front cover but also matched and followed through to the back cover (including the recurring pages inside). This look matched the chosen front image but related to the tagline of the magazine, ‘arranged and formed’. The article pages still connected to the flow of the magazine but created its own identity in itself, which allowed for more expression and less confusion in depicting which story belonged to what article. Throughout the magazine, the layout was combined of three columns, this allowed for easy reading and a structure that could be worked into any article length (being long or short). Another subtle design feature that was included was that on every spread, each opposite page would have a coloured background. This enhanced the user experience and assisted the overall composition of the magazine.
